The Trustees of the Open Episcopal Church in Scotland would like to make it clear that they do not run or in any way endorse the St Brendan Centre on the Isle of Luing, near Oban in Scotland and will not accept any public liability in the event of claims arising from public use of the establishment
We have been advised by the planning department of Argyll & Bute Council, in whose local authority area it is situated, that the St Brendan Centre does not currently have the relevant permission that may be required under The Town & Country Planning (Use Classes) Scotland Order 1997 and therefore it is clear that it should not publicise itself or operate as a Retreat Centre until planning permission is sought and granted. Thereafter it may also need to comply with further statutory requirements and there may also be a need for staff to meet the vetting procedures of the Protection of Vulnerable Groups (Scotland) Act 2007. We simply do not know whether the latter is the case but the uncertainty makes it impossible for us to endorse the facility at this time. More information on our Protection of Vulnerable Groups policy can be found here
The Open Episcopal Church Province of Great Britain & Ireland were, until recently, displaying a set of web pages that implied our bishop had retired and which endorsed the St Brendan Centre. For the avoidance of any doubt we are legally separate from and form no administrative part of the Open Episcopal Church, Province of Great Britain & Ireland, our own ruling body having recently voted overwhelmingly, and in full accordance with our legal statutes, to separate from the church in England & Wales because of continued attempts at administrative interference
