A Message For Lent From the International Council of Community Churches
The mysteries of life and death; of life and life eternal; of
death and resurrection: all are present in the penitential season
of Lent leading up to Easter. Those of us in colder climes seek a
too-easy parallel as we view the shivering, shuddering cold of
winter giving up its frigid embrace to longer days of sunlight.
But that metaphor is faulty because death is not hibernation, and
in the universe we see, resurrection is not a matter of sight. The
church year as opposed to the solar cycle, calls us to confront
our own emptiness in the face of death, and to struggle with
intimations of hope even while we are in the midst of our despair.
The proclamation of Easter is not one of easy grace, because as
the season of Lent reveals, our narrative as well as that of
scripture is one of horrible discontinuity and terrible contrast.
Resurrection does not happen before, beside or without
crucifixion.
Yet that unblinking acknowledgement of an awful universe, before
we leap to our hope for an awe-full cosmos, is what our age most
needs. Any call to faith that does not truly recognize tragedy and
pain is, especially for the world in which we live, a sham. The
proclamation of Easter when it is not separated from the narrative
of Lent, Holy Week and Good Friday, first recognizes our world for
what it is. Then and only then can the astounding, faith-bending
resurrection proclamation be proclaimed with integrity. Only then
can a message of hope that both comprehends and conquers the
dissolution of all our dreams be received with joy.
So in this season, let our gospel be full: living with the world’s
pain as well as offering balm, and first weeping with those who
grieve before rejoicing with those who celebrate. Only then will
it happen that when we greet the Easter dawn, those with and to
whom we minister will find the strength and courage to shout out
with us the good news: the Lord is risen; the Lord is risen
indeed!
May God bless you in your ministry this season and always.

Independent Jurisdiction The Open Episcopal Church in Scotland
The Open Episcopal Church in Scotland today re-affirmed that on
19th June 2011 the diocese of Scotland had by mandate removed
itself from the primacy of Archbishop Jonathan Clive Blake and his
college of bishops and from their Code of Canons, thereby
declaring itself an independent Province of The Open Episcopal
Church, now established in Scotland under a new canonical
structure in legitimate and historic succession of The Open
Episcopal Church formerly established as a diocese. The Church
will maintain its ecclesial identity in territories outside the
province with its canonically appointed bishops under the name of
The Open Episcopal Church International
The Presiding Bishop at present heads the Province of Scotland. In
Scotland the Church is to continue to be known simply as The Open
Episcopal Church with charity names of The Open Episcopal Church
in Scotland and The Open Episcopal Church Diocese of Scotland.
Whilst all ecclesial ties are now formally broken with Archbishop
Blake and his council of bishops the church in Scotland continues
as a legally established jurisdiction and is the only valid
expression of The Open Episcopal Church in Scotland. No bishop or
bishop-elect in or of Scotland of The Open Episcopal Church can be
recognised as such other than with the approval and Canonical
consent of the Presiding Bishop of The Open Episcopal Church in
Scotland as the Ordinary. Any attempt to make an episcopal
appointment in or to Scotland without such approval would be a
violation of Catholic order
Applications and enquiries from outside of Scotland to become an
independent jurisdiction of The Open Episcopal Church
International should be made to the Vicar
General

Attack on our Church Jonathan Clive Blake continues his shameful attack
It has come to our notice that people are receiving communications
from Archbishop Jonathan Blake, denigrating our Scottish Church
and in particular its Bishop. We must point out that Mr Blake has
no jurisdiction over our Church, which is totally independent from
his jurisdiction, and that his extravagant and defamatory comments
on our Bishop are totally without substance. We ask that anyone
receiving such a defamatory communication from Mr Blake will
contact our Church Authorities at.diocesan.secretary@openiscopalchurch.org.uk
so that we may give a full, true and clear refutation
The
Office of the Scottish Charity Regulator (OSCR) is the only
statutory authority that regulates us and they are fully aware of
Mr Blake's campaign against us. You may verify our legal status
and independent management structure by visiting their website
where you will also find further contact details for us

Criminal Campaign Email Campaign Against Senior Church Officials
The Trustees of The Open Episcopal Church in Scotland
have been made aware of emails circulating that say they have been
sent by an "archbishop of the Communion of the Open Episcopal
Church" and which state, falsely, that he has placed certain
senior members of this church "under discipline". We are
an independent church registered in Scotland and have
no connection with any church or communion called by the above
name, nor do we have an archbishop. The matter
has been reported to the Scottish Police who are referring it to
the Procurator Fiscal for possible criminal prosecution. The
Trustees are also considering issuing civil proceedings against
the perpetrator. Should you receive one of these crank emails
please forward it as an attachment to our Diocesan
Secretary who will pass it on to the authorities for use as
evidence

Protection of Vulnerable Groups PVG Scheme
The first member of clergy has now been processed through the new
vetting procedures and has become a member of the Scottish
Government's PVG Scheme. The PVG Scheme replaces earlier Enhanced
Disclosure (or criminal records) checks and goes further than ever
before in protecting vulnerable groups such as children, the
disabled and the elderly. PVG Scheme disclosures and membership,
which can only be accessed by churches and organisations here in
Scotland, are a legal requirement for anyone undertaking protected
work in this country. Enhanced Disclosures from any other
jurisdiction, including England & Wales, are not valid for
protected work in Scotland. Open Episcopal Church in Scotland
staff have undertaken full training, courtesy of the Church of
Scotland, and are fully registered to access and administer the
scheme. Existing Scottish Enhanced Disclosures remain valid for
work with The Open Episcopal Church in Scotland until all
remaining clergy and staff can be processed onto the new scheme
but cease to be valid if a member of clergy or staff leaves our
jurisdiction

ACTS Scotland
At a recent members meeting of Action of Churches Together in
Scotland (ACTS) an application to join that was submitted by the
Open Episcopal Church in Scotland was rejected on the basis that
the church did not fully meet the second requirement, which is "a
willingness to work ecumenically", and that it did not meet the
third requirement which is "to be organised on at least a Scottish
national level". As the Open Episcopal Church has fully
demonstrated its willingness to work ecumenically but has been
prevented from doing so largely due to hostility from several
other churches and because the Open Episcopal Church is a UK wide
organisation with congregations, missions and other ministries
stretching from Bournemouth on the south coast of England to
Kirkwall in the north of Scotland, clarification has been sought
from the next members meeting of ACTS in an attempt to discern why
our membership application has been rejected and what, precisely,
the church needs to do to conform to the membership requirement of
that organisation

life of the Christian Church nationwide and to work together with
other Christian churches for visible unity

resources for the Week of Prayer for Christian Unity and
throughout the year 2012
18-25th January 2012
Change is at the heart of our Christian faith.
Saint Paul said that anyone who is in Christ is a new creation,
and we are called to live as children in the light
The theme for the Week of Prayer for Christian Unity 2012 comes to
us from the churches in Poland, who have reflected upon their own
experience as a nation, and in particular how, as a nation, they
have been changed and transformed by the many upheavals of their
history, and sustained by their faith
The resources for 2012 are available as downloads from the CTBI
resources page
